Problem 572: Valery Shanshin - Twomover
valery.shansin(19.04.2015) In the hands of an expert the traditional King battery gets a modern look. Valery Shanshin shows the hidden possibilities in an apparently simple setting! Enjoy the intricate tries, white corrections and threat corrections!

Although i've lost contact with modern two-mover for quite some time, i must confess that this one really impressed me, not so much with its setting, but for the high quality of its content.Bravo Valery!

Very rich content, and hopefully original too (it looks like it could be). Both Se6 and Bf5 perform normal correction(s) and a threat correction. Of those two, 1.Sd4!? is especially shocking, seemingly destroying the battery for good.

A wonderful #2, one that I wouldn't mind seeing in a FIDE-Album three years from now...

A wonderful example of what inspiration and imagination could do in a seemingly dry mechanism. Only two thematic pieces create two pairs of equally interesting corrections of different types, and we see all 6 mates by the K-battery that unites the whole content. It's a shocking fact to know this #2 didn't get into award of a recent formal tourney!

April 21 is his birthday. I join you all wishing him a Happy Birthday and many more great problems like this one! The loss to that Formal Tourney is a gain for Kobulchess.com! I am sure this will be widely quoted in future.

as Anatoly mentions, the h1R has a very serendipitous role, but it's the balance of play by the 2 blocking officers(3 phases each!)that really sing here!

don't try to count things late at night! triple white correction by the knight, quadruple white correction by the bishop, each group with one threat correction! for all the richness going on here the repetition of the refutation 1...Rg1! is easily carried, certainly for the fact that it appears in the random try of each group, perhaps even a point of unity.
