14. The clear winner the tandem operation of the Knights is awesome, and the play is free of other distractions. The most enjoyable problem to solve. The wB wants to go home, but he must first be relieved of shielding duty. bS volunteers for the job, but must keep his own K shielded along the way, with a little help from wS. The amusing result is that wS leads the bS up the diagonal, drops him off at f7, then returns down to b3.Solution: Retract: -1...Sa1-b3 -2.Sc4-a5+ (The only way to avoid retro-stalemate. The two Knights need to get past each other on a narrow staircase) -2Sb3-a1 -3.Sb6-c4 Sa5-b3 -4.Sd5-b6+ Sc4-a5 -5.Sc7(f4)-d5Sb6-c4 -6.Se6-c7(f4)+ Sd5-b6 -7.Sf4-e6 Sc7-d5 -8.Sd5-f4+ Se6-c7 (The wS now goes all theway back in order to make way for the wB) -9.Sb6-d5 Sd8-e6 -10.Sc4-b6+ Se6-d8 -11.Sa5-c4 Sd8-e6 -12.Sb3-a5+ (at least 22 successive Knight moves preceded the diagram position) c6 c5 -13.Bc4-f7 Sf7-d8+ -14.Bf1-c4 c7-c6 -15.e2-e3 e3xBd2 -16.B~-d2 and the position unlocks.

15. The motivation of 4 of 5 shield changes is simply the fact that Black cannot remain idle admirable! The wS is eventually going NE to unpromote. However, at the diagram, blackmust do something other than burn precious P tempi, so wS takes over the screening role. 'Foresightfully' black realizes that d5 must be reserved for a P, and a bS on c7 cannot escape without use of that square. bS was better placed on d7 and we must get him back there. This requires three more changes of role. Only now can wS go unpromote. A timely wS uncapture and fifth role change frees bS for good. Solution: Retract: -1.a7xRb8R+ Sc5-d7 -2.Sd7-e5+ Sd3-c5 -3.Bf7-g8 Sb4-d3 -4.d3-d4 Sd5-b4 -5.e2xPd3 Sc7-d5 -6.Se5-d7 Bg8-h7 -7.Sc4-e5(Not -7.c2-c3?
