Venelin Alaikov was born on 18th February 1933 in the town of Shumen. He is one of the best Bulgarian chess composers of all times. He has been a grandmaster since 1993 and international judge since 1977. He published his first problem in the newspaper “Weekly rebus” in 1947, but his real chess composition activity began some years later.
Alaikov has published more than 1300 problems of almost all genres of this art (with the exception of studies and retro-problems) and he has won a great number of prestigious awards.
He has got 113.5 FIDE Album points which places him on 21st place in the rank list of all times. From 1993 to 2004 he was the head of the column “Composition” of “Shahmatna misal” magazine. He was a machine engineer and he was a specialist in work measurement.
