KoBulChess Helpmates in 2 moves 2016 Award |
(11.01.2019) Here is the Award of KoBulChess Helpmates in 2 moves 2016. Many thanks to the judge Shankar Ram! The award is open for claims for 1 month period.
Corrections in the Final Award:
- the 4th Prize winner now is with it's correct diagram;
- the 5th HM problem by Valery Gurov is removed because of the anticipation. Other HM problems which was behind it, now are 1 place up.
KoBulChess H#2 2016 AWARD
My thanks to the editors, Seetharaman and Diyan for inviting
me to judge this tourney. My apologies to all for the delay in
completing this award.
There were a total of 45 entries, including 12 revisions of the
original 33 published. I have also considered a few
originals which were “published” in the comments.
There were quite a few improvements of the originals, made
by other composers, which seems to be something common
in online sources like Kobul Chess and Julia’s Fairies,
due to their commenting feature. While this is, perhaps,
a good thing, the editors need to keep track of the versions
and also ensure the agreement of the original composers.
The level of the entries was very strong, which made
me include a rather high proportion of them in the
award: 7 prizes, 7 honourable mentions and 9 commends,
for a total of 23. The initial selection of all the problems
was made first. But the grading and ranking took more
time, and I had to do many revisions, as I made more
analysis and comparison of the content.
About 30% of the entries were HOTFs, including one
with 6 solutions. 40% were with 3 solutions, and the
remaining with 2.
There was a wide variety of styles in the problems.
From traditional 2 solutions, to HOTFs, Zilahis and
cycles involving pieces and squares. There seems to be
a trend, as observed here, to interpret HOTFs in different
ways, with a light linkage between the pairs, involving
non-strategic elements, coupled with very economical
positions. There were also attempts at “organised
disharmony”, which is worthwhile, but have to avoid
being a “virtue of necessity”!
My thanks and congratulations to all the participating
composers and my apologies to those whose problems
were not included.

Comments
In the 4th prize, WSf3 is superfluous (doesn't guard flights next to BK) in the first solution (Rd4#)
Thanks Vitaly. You are indeed correct. The judge will take a view on it.
Thanks and Kudos....NSRJI...
Hope after final we get the revised award in pdf form !
The choice by te judge is clearly explained in his comment.
About Problem 742v
The label should be : Jacques Rotenberg (after R.Riva). please correct it, thanks.
#4 Onkoud 2016-08-11 20:27
Position finale:
Abdelaziz ONKOUD &
Nebojsa JOKSIMOVIC
KoBulChess 2016
6q1/8/5s2/4P3/2sbkPPP/1p2SSpb/2p3Qr/3rRK2
h‡2 (9+11) C+
4.1.1.1
Actually, the version proposed by Nebojsa JOKSIMOVIC was different: 6q1/8/5s2/4P3/2sbkPPP/1p2SSpb/2p3Qr/3rRK2 - all white officers are needed in each mate position.
The position of 4th Prize was not published in Kobulchess.com 2016 IT.
I agree: Gurov's work may be included in the award since it is a Letztform.
Concerning no 742v - I don't mind if my name will be removed.
Milivoj S. NESIC, T.T. Liga Problemista 1998, 1° Place
8/n3pK2/pp2p3/1rB1kp2/1R2rp1b/1N1n4/8/3b4
This was the reason for which Vitaly's problem optained only a Special HM.
But I remind again - to avoid mistakes, please use ONLY english letters in the comments on the website, because comment #4 on the original publication of the problem 749 was full of mistakes because of the (most probably) french letters being used. The website recognizes only english (and bulgarian) alphabets letters (some specific french, german etc. letters may appears with mistakes).
Many thanks to all visitors who help with their comments, opinions and information!
